Are you being honest with yourself? by Suzanne-Helmigh, journal
Are you being honest with yourself?
As part of becoming good at something you need to be able to reflect upon yourself. Judge your own abilities and work and consider the possibility that what ever you have been doing it wrong all along. Or perhaps you're actually being to hard on yourself and you're better than your conscious is telling you. (This is bad too because it leads to insecurities.)
Signs that you might overestimate your current skills.
Do you often feel these things when you look upon work from good artists?:
I can totally do this too.
This is not so hard, I can do this faster.
My work is way more interesting.
It's not fair that this person gets way more atte
A little over a year ago I had a conversation with my now ex-boyfriend. I think he had walked in the room without me hearing him, and seeing him startled me. To this reaction, he made me a very enlightened comment: "You are creating out of fear."
I looked at him in puzzlement for a while before I agreed. Yes, it seems, I create in a state of fear. Then he went on saying: "Look at what you have produced until now, and imagine what your art will be when you no longer create with your fear."
He said just that. At that point in our existence, that afternoon, this person understood more about my mind than I did myself. And he was never an artis
Journal time!! I apologize for the length of this post, but I think it's important for artists, especially newer artists, to consider. Hopefully it will be of some use to you in your artistic journey. :)
SO... ConceptArt has been sending out emails to promo their study programs with little snippets of advice, some of them are good but one of them that came the other day really irks me. The first thing on their list is, "Study with a sense of urgency"
Now... this is my opinion, but I've heard similar sentiments from many other artists and creators who I would consider, "successful" in their field. And, in my opinion, "Study with a sense of u

When inspiration is far to be found...
We all get these anoying times when we really want to make something cool, get inspired and work that magic. We see everyone around us (online) do it, but how come we are not?
So we look for ways to get inspired, we ask around, find these usual answers: go watch a film, listen to music.. take a walk...
But even when we do that, we still end up stuck most of the time.
Part of the solution is knowing WHY we get stuck and this is my theory.

Are you down/depressed? by Suzanne-Helmigh, journal
Are you down/depressed?
I've noticed a lot of people feeling really down lately.. or in the past year really. I keep hearing it more and more and it made me wonder. Why are so many of my contacts/friends down/depressed?
Is it because they are artists? Is it my generation in general (people between 20 and 30).
Can't say I havent felt down as well at times. But there is always a thing that somewhat cheers me up.
Know that whoever you are, what ever you do, it's only you and your life, your wishes your things. And we are such tiny organisms on such a tiny planet which is simply a tiny dot in this massive space we call the universe. We are only here for a slight frac
Hey long time no see patients! I've oodles busy lately, but still developing new topics for discussion with you guys :D This blog is about what to do what to do if you happen to be that guy. By that guy, I mean someone who gets offended, hurt, defensive, or otherwise moody after a critique on his or her artwork. Now, I've talked extensively about unhelpful and abusive critiques, but have not yet talked about this. So let's talk about how to get more self aware and what to do if you are indeed that guy :D

I should begin this investigation by empathizing with you. Critical (or negative res
